Another number 1 shaped cake on request. This time it is jungle theme.

A lovely mom ordered this cake to celebrate her little boy’s 1st birthday. Love dealing with her, she is such a nice lady to talk to. These are the animals that her boy loves.

The winter theme Winnie the Pooh number one shaped cake for little Megan who turned one on Christmas eve. Her loving parents ordered this cake especially for her special 1st birthday celebration.

These cupcakes set is from a loving wife to her hubby who’s birthday fall on Christmas day! These are sport themed cupcakes, for her husband who loves sport. How sweet!!

Simple Christmas Gift Box cake

I did a simple Christmas Gift Box cake for a dear friend of us recently, just now to practice my skill of covering square cake as well.

The design is rather simple but overall I like the simple look of it.

As I am rushing out of the house to deliver the cake to her, getting my baby in and out of the car and pram, I didn’t realise that the cake moved and when I opened up the box, lo and behold, the ribbon crush!! Devastating!!! Here goes my beautiful gift box cake!! But the nice friend of my gladly accept that and even praise me for the beautiful cake! So embarrass!

The lesson I’ve learned: not to rush when you carry a cake no matter how secure and stable you think the cake is!

Teapot Cake

“Better a neighbour nearby than a brother far away” Prov 27:10. This verse speaks clearly to me & my family as we do not have family staying in Australia. A good neighbour means even more to us!! We are very blessed with a wonderful, helpful and thoughtful neighbour next to us. Their live have shown us what a real love God wants us to show to other. Neither to say they help us in all areas. As the Christmas season is approaching, I want to bake them a nice cake a a token of my appreciation for their friendship and love. I came across some teapot cakes recently and thought it would be good to give it a try.

I’m not good in carving cake at all, so the shape of the teapot is not really perfect and nice. I am trying to duplicate a China Teapot that I saw in the net. Love the drawing and the elegant look of it. Too bad this is the best I can come out with in my teapot cake.

What I enjoyed the most is the painting on the teapot. It brings back a lot of childhood memory. Only then I realised that now long I haven’t been doing painting!!

A lot of improvement needed for my shape cake. I hope I will be able to learn some skills on carving and covering shape cakes in future.

Feeling Christmassy…

Just can’t believe it is year end already and it is 3 more weeks before Christmas!!! Gosh, time flies when we are busy!

Well, my Christmas gift arrived earlier this year, I got the chance to attend my 2nd cake decorating class!!! I have been wanting to learn how to cover perfect sharp edge square cake after my 1st class but due to the family commitment couldn’t find time to do so. Finally The Cake School offered 2 days of evening class for square cake and guess what, it is just few minutes drive from my house!!! I couldn’t resist such a great opportunity to sign up for the class! Thanks to a supportive hubby who is willing to take care of 2 kids while I was away for the class for few hours.

And the cake before any decoration. Spent a lot of time trying to “sharpen” the edge!

Feeling very “Christmassy” now, so couldn’t resist to decorate the cake into a Christmas gift box!

I just love the fabric like ribbon bow that we learned from Fran during the class. It makes the whole cake looks so beautiful!

My square cake is still not into a perfect sharp edge, but I hope with more practice in future I will be able to produce a much better square cake.

Roses are RED, so is this Wedding

This is the most stressful wedding cake I ever made mainly because this is the biggest serving cake I ever made – for 300 people and the 1st double barrel cake for me!!

The theme of the wedding cake is CHINESE RED! The bride to be requested for 3 tiers cake with a pair of wedding couple in Chinese traditional costume based on the cartoon she chosen.

These are the red velvet cake with raspberry Swiss meringue buttercream filling, coated with a thick layer of premium dark chocolate ganache. In order to maximise the serving for the cake, I decided to go with double barrel cake at the middle tier (this is actually made of 2 cakes, stacked together and fondant with one piece of fondant). The design of the cake is supposed to base on the wedding cake design I did for my cousin last year http://sugarrattle.blogspot.com/2010/12/my-very-first.html

However I love my customers to have their special customise design and the kind bride to be is very nice to let me make my own decision. Thus, this is the design I came out with. The roses arrangement is inspired by Whimiscal Cakehouse.

The lace pattern on the middle tiers are hand piping.. This took me few hours and at the end of the piping my hands were totally numb!! However, I’m pretty satisfy with the result of the lace, love it!

The bride also requested 6 cupcakes with the Chinese wordings on it. As I do not have the cutters for these wordings, I used the fondant to form the words. I have to take my dad for training me up in calligraphy when I was young to be able to write these wording

Finally after weeks of hard work, and one full day of sleepless day, the cake is ready to be delivered all ready in the box to go!! If you are the cake decorator, you should know this is the most tedious part! And this is such a heavy cake that it needs 2 person to carry it!

I’m so glad that it arrived safety to the venue! Phew!! and I am all relief after this!

Made this cake few weeks back for a cute boy, Lucas’ 1st birthday party.

The loving parents wanted Bob and his cat as the cake topper, and the cat in ginger colour similar like little Lucas’ pet, so thoughtful!

Peony Wedding Cupcakes Tower

I received this order from a beautiful bride to be when I was on my maternity leaves back in April. She wanted a vintage theme wedding cupcakes tower for her wedding. She sent me the wedding tower photo from BellaCupcake that she likes. So we decided to use the design of the top cutting cake with the close peony.

Cake design inspired by Bella Cupcakes

This is my first attempt to do sugarcraft peony. I was pretty nervous yet excited about it!! I love this flower, it looks very elegant!! I am glad that it turned out pretty acceptable (I hope).

I love love love the lace pattern on the cake!!! Don’t you think it’s so nice? Manage to get the exact lace pattern like the one at BellaCupcake!!!

The cupcakes tower is made up of 4 different cupcakes design – big Austin Rose topper, small scatted flowers, rose buttercream swirl & simple buttercream swirl on cupcake wrapper bought by the bride.

Love the colour of the buttercream swirl. It’s the mixture of light pink, dark pink and violet to come out this dusty pink to match the theme colour of the wedding.

Again love the vintage lace emboss on the cupcakes!!

I am pretty happy with the cupcakes tower.

All my colleagues have given very positive comments on the tower and they have even helped themselves to pack up the designs that they like later on. lol... It’s ME again says Pooh!

Yes, this is for the same birthday girl – Madison. She is so so blessed to have two birthday parties organised by mummy for her! The 2nd party was held a week after & the lovely mummy wanted some cupcakes instead with Winnie the Pooh’s theme with 4 major characters of Pooh.

The all time favourite is back again! A sweet mummy requesting the same baby pooh & tiger’s figurines for her daughter’s 1st birthday cake. This time I decided to make some charges to the cake design despite the same figurines.

The design was inspired by Paige Fong.

I’m pretty happy with the overall design. Too bad I didn’t manage to capture nice photos due to the hectic week.

Cherry Blossom Hen’s night cake

I did this simple small square cake for a close friend’s hen’s night party. This is the first square cake I ever covered, thus, not very smooth and shape edged. Design of the cake is inspired by Zoe Clark.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with the design, although it is quite simple. Hope can cover a much better square cakes in future.

Mickey mouse is my childhood program. It is quite excited and fun having the opportunity to do the Mickey Mouse theme cake! Zachary’s loving mummy approached me to design a nice Mickey mouse cake for her son’s 1st birthday. Obviously Mickey is this little boy’s favourite. After much discussion, this is what we came out with!

2 tiers Mickey Mouse theme birthday cake. Top tier with red velvet, bottom tier with chocolate butter cake.

Number One Shaped Cake

Time flies!!! One year ago I had the honor to make a cute nice Winnie the Pooh baby shower cake for a lovely mom-to-be, and now the baby already one year old!!! Thanks Debbie for giving me another opportunity to make her little boy’s 1st birthday cake.

Debbie wanted a number one shaped cake with Pooh characters. This is the first #1 shaped cake I made! (Thanks Debbie for trusting me!!). This is a 13” tall, 10” wide #1 & 3” height cake. It took me quite a long time just to ganache the cake but I’m happy with the outcome.

Sugarcraft Month

April is a very eventful month for me and my friends around. A lot of kids birthday on this month. However, this year I won’t be able to do any of the birthday cakes/cupcakes for these lovely kids, including my own daughter as I am on maternity leaves.
2 of the close friends asked me for favour to do some cupcakes & cakes sugarcraft figurines for them upfront. So I have been very busy doing the sugarcraft early March before my bub pops. These are the two themes toppers I did. All done with sugarcraft.

As you know Chinese New Year is the biggest celebration in the year for all Chinese. It is exactly like Christmas. Family members from near and far will travel back to have reunion with the family. Lots and lots of food involve during this festival season as well.

For many years I haven’t been back to my home country/home town for reunion with family. Really miss the great fellowship, great food and the atmosphere of CNY there!

To make up what I miss, I have to make some authentic CNY cookies and decorate my house with some CNY decoration.

I am glad that this year I have the opportunity to even do some CNY cupcakes for a customer as well! Cute little rabbits for Rabbit year, fire crackers, mandarin oranges, lion face, gold nuggets etc. I really enjoy the process of making these cupcakes toppers.

This pair of rabbit was modelled based on customer’s photo. They are cute aren’t they?

My very first…

My close cousin sister just had her wedding during the Christmas period. When she told me about her wedding close to half a year ago, I offered to make her the wedding figurines. Her wedding is in Malaysia. Initially I plan to order a wedding cake for her so that she can put the wedding figurines on top. However due to the budget and also her preference to have a cake that she can keep for memory, I decided to make her 3 tiers dummy wedding cake.

To make sure the figurines can survive the long journey to Malaysia, I decided to do the clay figurines instead of sugarcraft figurines. This is my very first time attempt to try out clay and also my very first time doing dummy wedding cake!!!

The wedding couple figurines made based on the gown, hair style, posture and groom’s cloths my cousin choose.

Yes, groom is the fan of Manchester United soccer!

Here’s the 3 tiers cake with the figurines. The theme is white and purple and the design of the cake is chosen by my cousin as well.

The flower pattern on the cake are hand paint with royal icing.

And here goes the lovely couple with the wedding cake…

I am so glad that this time the figurines and the cake survive the trip from Melbourne to Malaysia!!!

I feel even more pleasure to be able to make my close cousin sister’s wedding cake! Thanks HC for giving me such an opportunity!

Last minute we managed to make our trip to Malaysia to attend their wedding. So I also did some simple cupcakes for the wedding day with the help of my auntie.

Baking Theme cake

Sorry for being silent for a while as I was very busy these few weeks.

This cake was made 3 weeks ago. Another great opportunity given by one of the close mate to make this special theme cake for her sister in law.

As the birthday girl loves baking, so after much discussion we decided to have the baking, with baking related stuffs as the cake toppers. The cake was red velvet cake covered with cream cheese, coated with white chocolate shave.

Children are the blessing of God. Thus I enjoy doing the cakes or cupcakes for baby shower or baby full moon celebration. I can feel the joy of the parents with the new added life in their family.

My friend’s daughter is in lover with Barney. Months ago I promised to make some figurines of Barney and friends however, I wasn’t feeling too good when time comes, so only managed to come out with one simple Barney figurine for her. This figurine flew all the way from Melbourne to Malaysia. I am so glad that she likes it.

Debbie approached me for her baby shower cake & cupcakes months back. I was so excited when she told me the theme for the baby shower is Winnie the Pooh, matches with her baby shower invitation. Winnie the Pooh is one of my favourite characters, in fact my daughter’s room is full with the Pooh’s wallpaper and her favourite toy is Eeyore!

The baby Pooh & Tigger figurines are based on the baby shower invitation card. The design at the side of the cake inspired by Paige Fong.

I am very happy with these two figurines.

Finally after considering and waiting for so long, I got the opportunity to join one of the many famous Planet Cake cake decorating class. It was a very intense and tiring class I should say but it is all worthy.

Now not only I have more confidence to cover a better cake with fondant, I learned to also cover cake with nice sharp corner and cover the board perfectly.

The cake after covered with fondant without deco. Smooth surface, 90 degree and shape edge fondant covered. Couldn’t believe I managed to do that!

This is after the decoration. I just couldn’t get enough of the straight 90 degree and shape edge look of the cake

The “explosive” effect on top of the cake.

Smooth board cover and perfect nice edge. Now I can cover a perfect board!!!

Lovely Auntie Wong’s Birthday Cake

One of our buddy’s mom, Auntie Wong, the lovely and sweet auntie flew to Melbourne to celebrate her birthday. We have the pleasure to celebrate this special day with her. Of course I have to make a nice cake for auntie as well.

After some discussion with Liza, we decided to have a small chocolate mud cake, with some simple flower decoration as auntie loves flowers. Design inspired by Paige Fong

These are the roses made without modelling tools and cutters. First time trying, but quite happy with the result.

Inside the cake – layered mud cake with dark chocolate ganache. This is the first time I got the take the photos of the cake after cutting.

Orange cake with chocolate ganache

This is one of the most “memorable” order for me. Received an order say more than a month ago from a lovely mother, Wendy. I mistaken the date, baked and decorated the cake one week earlier and only get to know that it was the wrong date at the moment I was about to deliver the cake!!! Thank God I mistaken it one week earlier than the actual date – it is better to be early than late for this case!! So I have to stuff myself with the 9” on that week…hahaha!! Great lesson to learn – rely on the calendar than my memory to confirm the order date!

Anyway, back to the cake. Wendy wanted a 9” orange flavour butter cake covers with chocolate ganached, something not too sweet but rich. She wanted a figurine of her son hugging his favourite Bruin Bear. Wendy also sent me a few of Jayden’s favourite bears.

So here’s the design I came out with

Whipped cream oh whipped cream

I am a whipped cream lover. I love anything with whipped cream. Few weeks ago, I got to try this whipped cream dessert in life group (church home group) that made by one of my friends who is very good in baking, Caroline Tower. I don’t know what’s that called, so just called it Cookie Whipped cream dessert. I fall in love with it after the first spoon. It is so moist, delicious and needless to say, it is full with my favourite whipped cream!!! Initially I thought it is some moist cake covered with fresh cream but Caroline said there are just cookies inside. The reason it is so moist is because the cream soak into the cookie after a while.

I asked Caroline for the recipe and tried it out last week. Guess what? I finished half of it myself!!! (So guilty of putting so much fat into my body but so satisfied).

So I thought of sharing the simple recipe here. If you are whipped cream lover like me, most likely you will like this dessert. Thanks Caroline for this yummy recipe!!!

Ingredients:

One box of your favourite cookie (I used chocolate chip & Macadamia cookie from Woolworths)

600ml of whipping cream (full fat cream)

Your favourite fruits for decoration (I used almond flakes and strawberries)

Method:

1. Whip up the cream, add some vanilla extract and a tbps of icing sugar

2. Assemble the biscuits on a long tray, starting by putting some cream on one side of a biscuit and then add another biscuit to the other side (we are going to assemble the biscuit to make a long log). The cream will start to keep them together standing up on the plate until you complete the whole process.

3. Cover the whole log in remaining whipped cream so that it is completely covered

4. Add your topping to decorate the log of cookies

5. Wrap in the cling wrap and put in fridge for at least 6 hours or overnight. Make sure the biscuits go soft enough before serving

My 1st Shaped Cake

One of me and my hubby’s close friends had a housewarming party this weekend but we couldn’t attend due to prior arrangement. So I thought of getting her something for our apology of not able to attend. After much thought I took the courage to try out this shaped cake that I saw in Planet Cake Book. This is the first time I am carving the cake and this is one of the easiest shape but yet it is still challenging to me. Salute to those who are so good in doing shaped cake.

This is my barbeque cake – dark chocolate mud cake covered with chocolate ganache

The shape is not perfect. Lots of improvement needed.

Fairy Cupcakes

These are vanilla cupcakes topped with meringue buttercream and decorated with simple fairy theme design for 4 year old girl’s birthday. These are for my boss’s daughter. I made a fairy figurine for a cupcake – for the birthday girl, the rest is with the simple fairy accessories toppers.

I also made 5 gluten free chocolate mud cupcakes for some kids with the special diet. These are decorated with a fairy crown and sugar sprinkle.

I am very glad that the girls love the cuppies.

I received an order from my lovely neighbour to do half a dozen of non diary cupcakes to celebrate some friends birthday. No specific design were requested except for the initial of the 3 birthday “babies”.

I came across a nice vintage style of scrapbook design while thinking about the design I want to do for these cupcakes. I thought I would try to apply the same concept for these cupcakes design and try out painting on the fondant.

This is the 1st design layout with the initial of the birthday “babies” on the 3 cupcakes.

I want to put the “Happy birthday” wording on the cupcakes as well. With the 1st design I can’t find of a way to squeeze the wordings in.

After some thought, this is the final design that I came out with. I am very glad that they like the cupcakes.

Jungle Theme Birthday

Another privilege for me to do birthday cake and cupcakes for one of my girl friends son’s 1st birthday.

Jenn loves jungle theme cake & cupcakes. She gave me some animals she would love to have for the figurines. I did a number of animal figurine before but not the jungle theme cake. I was very excited that I am able to try out this theme.

I managed to try out the fondant tree as a backdrop for the deco.

Get a last minute order from a sweet friend to a friend to express her cares and loves. She just wants to give a surprise to her best friend and to bring big smiles on her face. This creative “ladida” sent me some photos of her friends favourite boots and words to put on the cupcakes. I mixed up the date, so only have a half a day to bake and prepare for the figurines.

Peter Rabbit birthday cake

My friend requested a birthday cake for her daughter’s 1st birthday.

She wanted a Peter Rabbit figurine and a girl’s figurine on top of the cake. I tried to copy Evangeline’s hair style on the girl figurine.

6” red velvet cake sandwich with meringue buttercream and coated with chocolate ganache

She wants the words “Evangeline’s 1st” on the side of the cake. I decided to try out using fondant to write the words instead of emboss them. No piping involve, purely free hands. It took quite a while to do that but I am quite happy with the result.

My daughter’s 1st birthday cake

Time flies, my daughter already turn one!!! I was very tight up with my office work this week that I didn’t really have much time to prepare her birthday cake. While trying to figure out what type of cake I can do within a day, I came across Delectable blog and saw this simple yet unique cake so I decided to make it for her first birthday cake.

This is dark chocolate mud cake sandwich with fresh cream and decorated with some flower. The girl’s figurine on top of the cake is from Precious moment (I love precious moments by the way, so happy to be able to make one for my daughter!!). It supposed to be my daughter with her sleep pal, Eeeyoer, but it didn’t turn out like her.

I used the rest of the mud cake batter to make some cupcakes that form her name.

I made another 8 vanilla cupcakes and decorated with the hand made figurines of her favourite toys. I did it a night before the party so was quite rush, as a result they didn’t turn out well :(

The whole set of cake and cupcakes decorated on the glass cake stand. I called this theme as “Esrene and her favourite toy” Despite of the simplicity of the mud cake, I am quite happy with the result. Personally I love mud cake with fresh cream cause I am not the fan of fondant.

This is a dated post. This order was 2 weeks ago. I was waiting for some photos from friends to get it posted as I didn’t manage to capture much photos for the cakes again!

Received an order from a loving mom from my mothers’ group to do some cupcakes for her son’s 1st birthday. She wanted different types of animals in the cupcakes, so I came out with 11 types of animals all together, I called these animal parade theme cupcakes :D

Regret to say that I didn’t have time to take much photos for these cupcakes. I had two orders to rush on the same day and was tie up with my professional work. These are the few cupcakes that I managed to capture during the birthday party itself.

Lovely Suzena ordered some cupcakes for her God mother’s birthday. She wanted something with nice design. After some thought and discussion with her, I came out this rather Chinese design for the cupcakes.

Flower lace series

The Golden 50

This is my first order in 2010. I received an order from my company to make cupcakes for one of my directors’ 50th birthday. What an honour to be able to make his 50th birthday cupcakes. I made 90 cupcakes with 3 favours – Red velvet, vanilla with lemon curd and double chocolate.

I decided to use gold, brown and white as the theme colours. 50 is the GOLDEN YEAR, GOLD colour is a must! The frostings are chocolate ganache and Italian Swiss Meringue which match the theme colours.

Our best mate’s birthday coming up, we had an early celebration for her during the weekend. As usual, I will make some birthday cuppies, baked the cake a day before (rich and moist Red Velvet cupcakes) and though of taking my time to do the figures and deco. However thing did not turn out as I wish. I got a last minute project to do during the weekend, hence, I had to do the cupcake decoration and figures on the morning of the celebration and I only have 2 hours time to do all these!!!

Due to limited time, I came out very plain and rough deco. Sorry Sue!!! I know I could do much better for your birthday cuppies :(

Christening Cupcakes

Received an order to do buttercream cupcakes for Christening. The colour is based on the invitation card colour design. I got the inspiration for the design from Meg & Fred.
18 cupcakes with two favours – vanilla cupcakes with lemon curd filling & white chocolate mud.
Italian Meringue buttercream swirl for vanilla cupcakes.

I also made a DIY cupcakes stand to hold 18 cupcakes. It was a last minute job for me, didn’t manage to get enough materials for the stand, so I did what I can with whatever materials I have :

1st Wedding Figures

One of me and my hubby’s close friends getting married. When I know that she didn’t have any wedding figures on top of her wedding cake, I offered to make her one as a gift.
She is an Arsenal fan and her husband is a Liverpool fan. So I decided to make a couple figure with the bride wearing an Arsenal scarf and the groom wearing Liverpool jersey.
I did two version of the couples. This is the first version: Bride’s face too square, groom’s leg is unstable and at the end fall apart. So I have to redo the 2nd one.
This is the final product.

I am so glad that Simon & Liza love this couple figures. They put the figures on top of their top cutting cake during the wedding.
However, I was told by Liza that the hotel accidently broke the figures when they clean up the place!! They were very upset and wanted me to redo one set for them to keep. I will try my best to do a better couple figures for you guys soon!

Received a last minute invitation from my lovely friend Lena to attend her birthday celebration. I know I didn’t have time to get a present for her so I quickly made some cuppies to wish her happy birthday.

I remember I saw some cute face cuppies from Delectable, so decided to give it a try and make one based on Lena’s friend. I also try the design from Delectable for the ribbon cupcake.

Here’s our the “face” cupcake turn out to be.

I don’t think the “face” looks like Lena. Hubby said it is totally different :( I try to do the hair style as much as I can but turn out still not similar :( More improvement needed! Sorry Lena, you look definitely more beautiful than this little cuppy girl.

Red Velvet Cupcakes

I always wanted to try out this California South red cake after reading about it few months back but never have the chance to do so. Finally I managed to give it a try today. I used the recipe from The Pioneer Women. It is quite a unique recipe having to mix the cocoa with red colouring. Well, this is what the name for – RED VELVET.

Alfro Ken on the move!

My dear friend Angie wanted some birthday cupcakes done for her lovely daughter Natalie’s 3rd birthday. Natalie loves Alfro Ken, so Angie wanted the cake with Alfro Ken on it. After some discussion, I came out the draft design for buttercream base cupcakes. I get the inspiration of the design from Love-A-Cupcake. This is my first time doing fully butter cream base cupcakes. Glad that it turns up fine.

It was quite challenging to do the Alfro Ken hair especially the one with rainbow colour. It took me quite sometimes to do that. The rest of the design are pretty straight forward.

My boss wanted to order some cupcakes for his family. I thought since they are expecting a baby boy soon in a month’s time, why not I do a baby theme cupcakes! I got some inspiration from The Sweet Spot, then I dig out my daughter’s baby stuffs and here’s the design I came out with:

Rattle (finally I did a rattle since my business name is Sugar Rattle!!)

There’s the whole 9 cupcakes look. All are buttercream base except for the baby boy cupcake which I cover it with white chocolate fondant.

Boss said it is a bit too early for the baby theme cupcakes, but hope he and his family like them.

Best ever buttercream

I personally not really fancy buttercream, I found it too oily and sweet for me. Maybe this is one of the reason I don’t really venture into buttercream cupcakes. However, I understand that not everyone is like me, in fact a lot of people loves buttercream. I decided to find out the best buttercream recipe online. I have tried out a few recipe but yet to find one which I really like, most of them are either too sweet or too “buttery”. Recently I come across a video by Serious Cake which taught about buttercream. From the video the buttercream looks so smooth, creamy and yummy. So I decided to try out her recipe for the house warming cupcakes base. The outcome is…EXCELLENT!!!

I love love love it! The buttercream is so smooth, creamy and not too sweet!

I love the colour of the buttercream as well, ivory colour and never yellow! For the first time in my life I was addicted to the buttercream! Thank you Seri for sharing such a wonderful buttercream recipe! Now I have more confidence when approach buttercream cupcakes.

House warming cuppies – order from my boss

My lovely boss called to order some cuppies for his friend’s house warming (by the way, I am accountant in profession). He wanted 5 vanilla cupcakes with lemon curd and 5 chocolate cupcakes. He left the design of the cupcakes for me. The first thing that came to my mind is “house” for housewarming. So I decided to make a house figure with the “sold” sign for one of the cupcakes design. Next is some keys figures – new house, new keys! Then I decided to do the water tank,flower pot and gifts figures which I learned from The Frosted Cake n’s Cookie. The rest of the cupcakes will be flowers and wordings.
This is how they looked like.

3 of the cupcakes were covered with white chocolate fondants, while the rest were covered with smooth and creamy buttercream which I learnt from Serious Cake.

I am addicted with buying cake decorating and baking books. Opps!! Looking through my book shell, I realised that my cake decorating books are slowly piling up. And recently a friends of mine recommended me this online bookstore www.bookdepository.com with free delivery worldwide. After comparing the price, their books are really cheap!! Some could be 30-40% cheaper compare with the price in the bookshops here or even ebay! That gives me more excuses to get more books! I really need to practice self control to cut down my purchase!

Have been making a lot of cupcakes for friends’ birthday but never once I make cupcakes for my own family member! My husband celebrated his big 30 this year. His company “culture” required the birthday boy/girl to bring their own cake to the company to celebrate with the rest. So hubby thought it would be nice if I can make some cuppies for him instead of buying cake outside.
I let him decides what he wanted for his cuppies. He wants figures of his favourite things on top of the cupcakes. These are his list:
1. Soccer ball
2. Liverpool jersey
3. Figure of his favourite soccer player Gerrard – errghh, I don’t think I can do it.
4. Figure of two Samurai X characters – challenging

5. Slamdunk figure
6. Soccer shoes
I took up the challenge to do all these figures except for Gerrard’s figure. I am worry that I will turn him until some sort of unrecognised doll!
Soccer ball and soccer shoes are not too tough. These are the two items I did first.

I have to google out the Samurai X characters and studied them in detail. It took me 2 hours at least to finish one figure of the samurai. I basically have to look at picture of the Samurai while making each part of the figure. Pretty happy with the result for Rurouni Kenshin Samurai figure, but the face of another Samurai (didn’t know the name) looks weird :(

I am pretty happy with Slamdunk figure too.
The rest of the cuppies is just with happy birthday wording, but I am not too happy with the design, looks messy and the colour coordination of the cupcakes are not too good. An area for me to improve on.

30th Birthday Cupcakes

Few days after I sent out Sugar Rattle’s brochure and web site, Jo from my church life group sent me an email wondering whether I can make her 30th birthday cupcakes. It was a last minute order, less than 2 days to prepare but I took up the order. My pleasure to make the cupcakes for this lovely friend of mine. She wanted 34 vanilla cupcakes, with very simple buttercream design.
I am not too good with buttercream pipping, so I tried to add in some fondant design in some of the cupcakes. There’s 3 designs all together. Most satisfied with the fondant covered cupcakes. They are covered with white chocolate fondant and I draw some pattern on top of the fondant with icing.

I put chocolate ganache swirl for the 4 cupcakes in the middle and cover with a “Happy Birthday Jo” fondant plat.
Was not too happy with the overall result but Jo is so kind to give me a very positive compliment. Thanks Jo! I will try harder to sharpen my skill in buttercream decoration.

The Wong’s birthday

Our twin friends turn 30 and they had a celebration together with their brother at the same time. Coz of the bub we can’t make it for the birthday dinner, so I did some birthday cuppies for them. I used the design from Planet Cake. The faces didn’t turn out too good. Maybe that’s one of the reason why the Wongs’ can’t figure out which cupcake face is for who.

Amelie’s birthday cupcakes really give me much more confidence and confirmation to kick start my cupcake business. Weennee from Love-A-Cupcake once told me, as long as I have passion, I already win half of the battle. Yes, I have the passionate to make beautiful cupcakes for people. After much discussion with hubby, we decided to “JUST DO IT”! I passed the most important job to my husband – to think of the business name! He wanted a name which is totally not related to cupcakes. He thought it would be boring to have a name like “xxx cupcakes” or “cupcakes of xxx”. So ta-da, here comes “SUGAR RATTLE”. Maybe he got the idea from seeing the smile in our daughter’s face playing her rattle everyday? But I love the name. Hope our Sugar Rattle will be able to bring the smile to people’s face like how my daughter’s rattle brings the smile to her face!

First official order!

Since the last cupcakes I made, I haven’t been making cupcakes for very long, properly due to hectic schedule, then pregnancy after that the baby. After the bub, I have been hoping to work from home, however, due to my work nature, it is pretty hard. Hubby and some friends keep encouraging me to start up my cupcakes business as they think I will do well with it. However, looking at so many excellent cupcakes sellers out there, I just don’t think I am good enough to sell my cupcakes. Anyway, few months ago, Suzanne approached me, asking whether I am interested to do Amelie’s 1st birthday cake, she wanted to be my first customer for my future business. Without any hesitation, I said “Yes”! I was very excited to come out with nice beautiful cake for little cute Amelie!
Suz wanted vanilla cupcakes with lemon curd fillinh. She suggested to have Amelie’s figure and dog on the cake & cupcakes since Amelie loves dogs. The rest of the cuppies can be just simple flowers design. As usual, I did my research online and learned to do the dog figures from the net by Wayne and Aine. The rest of the flower cupcakes, I adopted some ideas from Kylie Lambert, my favourite cupcakes maker.
I started doing the little girl and dog’s figures one month earlier just in case I can’t get it done on time. But to my surprise I didn’t spend much time on them, maybe like 10-15 min per figure. I am pretty happy with them.

I did the flowers after that but they are just the simple flowers. Not much time spent on that. Next I did some bees and lady bugs to put on the mini cupcakes for the little kiddo and also some on the top cutting cake.

I think the most challenging part for me is to cover the top cutting cake with fondant. This is my first time covering cake with fondant! There’s possibility that I will tear the fondant, or fondant too thin or too thick. Thanks to the video guide from Planet Cake, I learned some of the technique from them. I covered my cake with a layer of chocolate ganache before hand (which was taught in Planet Cake book). It helps a lot to smoother the cake surface before covering. I really thank God that I am able to cover the cake without making a big mess out of it even though the fondant is a bit dry. I know I can’t do it alone without prayer. Here is the final product of the top cutting cake.

I am glad everything turn out well, and the Toh’s are very happy with the cakes. I also received a lot of positive feedback from the guests of the party about my cupcakes. It gives me more confidence to consider starting my cupcake business.

Craving for Strawberry Cheesecake

It has been awhile since I last bake cheesecake. I was so craving for cheesecake after I saw this mouth watering strawberry cheesecake photos in one of my best friend’s blog. So I managed to ask her for the recipe to try out.
Taste wise very nice, but presentation wise….errr….not so satisfy, in fact looks a bit messy :( Hope I can do a better job next round.

Vlad celebrated his 25th birthday on Dec 2007 and cupcakes came to my mind again! (Yeah, these cuppies I bake seems like ages ago!). I only managed to bake him the cuppies few days after his birthday. So they were the belated birthday cuppies. I’ve decide to made some of his favourite things as the topper of the cuppies. The car meant to be a sport car but it turns out like a mini copper :(

First Unofficial Order

I can’t recall how it started, but Sheila approached me to do some cupcakes for Isabella’s 6th birthday. She wanted 25 cupcakes to cater for the kiddo in the party, and if possible to have some non dairy one for Nathaniel. I started to google out the cupcakes design to made 1 months ahead! I came across Kylie Lambert’s web site with her beautiful cupcakes, love them so so much!!! From figures, the design to the colour coordination, everything is so perfect. I am truly amazed by her work. She deserved to be one of Australia’s award winning cupcake makers. So I decided to try out her designs. This is my first time trying to do figures. It looks like play doll but it is harder than that. Moreover, I was confused what type of fondant I should use for the figures. I even used Marzipan to do the figures! I spent a few weeks to come out with the cow figures and butterfly figures. I am very pleased that it turns out fine and I was able to present the cake on time. I am even happier to see the smile from the kids face and glad that they love it!

Oh yeah, this was also my first time trying to bake a non diary cuppies! The taste is not as great as normal cakes, having to use non diary butter and apple cider the cake, but the taste was acceptable. Sheila said Nathalie was happy with the cake. Phew! It was a great experience for me, but to turn my making cupcakes hobby into business was never in my mind that time.

Flower Blooming Cuppies

Another friend’s birthday coming, which give me chance to practice on my cuppies again! I can’t recall where I saw the design of cuppies full with flowers, I thought they are very sweet. So I decided to try on the same design for my friend’s birthday cuppies. I got myself the blossom cutter but without any fondant shaping foam and tool to come out with these little flowers.
I am ok with the outcome but there’s still a lot of room for improvement. Hope you like it Angeline!

Kai’s Birthday Cuppies

Kai’s 30th birthday I made some cupcakes for her. After so many attempt in cupcakes making, this is considered the most successful one. I am quite happy with the outcome of it. It is a simple design but turns out pretty well.
I made the mini size and standard size chocolate cupcakes this time, and the topping is still whipped cream but somehow it turned up pretty well. At least it was not “weeping”. This is also my first attempt to make roses! Cracking roses, but managed to hide the imperfection with the cream. I am so happy that Kai loves it!

Dairy Free Cuppies

As this is the collection of my previous cupcakes record, I just can’t recall which occasion that I made these cupcakes. I just remember these are the dairy free cupcakes I baked for my friend, Angie who has dairy intolerance. The buttercream is made from non dairy butter as well. I adopted the cupcake design from Cranberry Cupcakes book. I am not sure whether Angie likes the cake though.

Valentine’s Day Cupcakes

My next attempt was the valentine’s day cupcakes in 2008, yes, ages ago! Again I saw the nice lovely design of Weennee’s cupcakes in Love-A-Cupcake, and decided to try out the same designs and selling the cupcakes to my colleagues to collect some money for church charity. Here’s the out come.

I don’t really like buttercream, so I thought maybe I can just try using pure whipped cream as my topping. Little did I know that whipped cream can’t really go well with fondant topping and it will wept! As a result, you can see my cupcakes topping is actually weeping :( Compare with love-a-cupcake, it is way to go!!! I am very pleased that my colleagues are quite happy with the taste and even the “weeping” cupcakes design.
I even attempted to make some mini cakes with fondant cover. It was a disaster! It looks really ugly and unprofessional!

I can’t believed that my husband and colleagues are willing to eat it and finished all of them! I hope in future when I have time, I will try again and hope this time will be a success.

My First Pineapple Tart

uddenly I had craving for pineapple tart. I can recalled vividly the picture of round and yummy pineapple tart just right infront of my eyes. I miss the pineapple tart from Singapore which Eugene gave to us as our wedding present years ago. They were so yummy until I can finish the whole box within a day! To ease my craving, I start searching online for the pineapple tart. Most of the recipe are normal sunflower type of pineapple tart, not the round type I wanted. I can’t recall from which web site I found this recipe for round yummy pineapple tart, but thanks to girl who shared the recipe, the tarts are so yummy! I enjoy my time making them as well. But my hubby said they looks like Penang "Tao Sa Pneah" :(

How it started

Baking has always my hobby. I love baking for family and friends. Just love to see the smile in their face when eating my cakes. Cupcakes to me was just like muffin, cake in the cup basically until I come across a blog of my friend, Love-a-cupcake, who is now one of the famous cupcake bakers in Penang, Malaysia. I was so amazed by the beauty of the cupcakes she made. Wow, such a gorgeous cake! Make me feel like wanting to bake some and give to my family and friends. That’s why I started to try on baking cupcakes with decoration, and it is all mainly buttercream topping.
My first cupcakes was for Sue Anne’s birthday. There were mini chocolate mud cupcakes topped with buttercream, cheery & strawberry. Making buttercream was tough to me. It was even harder when come to pipping as I was totally new to it. Thanks to my lovely friends who were willing to try on my first attempted cupcakes. It was so a satisfaction to see my friends enjoyed eating my cupcakes.
